How many times have you dreaded doing something and stopped to realize that the dread only made it an even more unpleasant experience? Our attitude towards everything we do truly has an impact on both the experience and the outcome. Now imagine dreading waking up in the AM and going to a job you hate, five days a week… That sounds like a nightmare to me. Now imagine having no choice but to do so… We need the money! (and the experience, or both)
You need to go to work, and you may not be able to control your annoying boss or the piles of emails waiting to be read in your inbox but you can control this: your attitude. Having a positive attitude will strengthen your professional commitment and will bring out the fun where least expected. And, lucky for you, here’s how!
LET’S START WITH KNOWING WHAT ON EARTH YOU’RE THERE TO DO
There’s nothing more unsettling than being unsure of what you’re meant to do. I’ve had my own share of people bombarding me with emails asking for reports I had no idea I had to prepare in the first place. If you have an actual Job Description (JD) that lists almost every task you are responsible for within the organization, that’s great. But a lot of companies make do without them. So in this case, take matters into your own hands and create your own list of responsibilities; include as much detail as possible and you’ll instantly feel in control.
FIND OUT HOW YOU CAN ADD VALUE TO THE TEAM
Whether you work in a tiny startup or a large organization, knowing what you add to the team makes all the difference. In my case, I’ve always been the cheerful co-worker, ready to plan birthdays and team outings and always looking for the next fun thing to do. In return, my team knows that they can turn to me for some positive energy whenever they needed it. Creating your own character and style at work can make you more comfortable in being yourself and makes your workday way more enjoyable.
LOOK FOR EXCITEMENT – OR CREATE IT!
I mean, who doesn’t dream of a fun job, right? We all dream of taking the slide instead of the stairs, an infinite supply of ice cream (and rainbow sprinkles, please), and a one hour YouTube break (yaaas!) – and while there are jobs that do come with a Happy Meal, the majority (still) don’t. So if you don’t have 50 scoops of ice cream to look forward to, what’s the point of going to work, right? Wrong. Your job is as exciting as you make it; whether you work on Excel all day (colorful tables galore!) or facilitate meetings (lots of people to meet!), find something to be excited about every single day. I tend to get excited about meetings with new people and, no brainer, my lunch break!
Noooobody likes a complainer, ok? Have you ever known someone who complained about everything, every single time you talked? Yeah. Don’t be that person. If you’re going to complain about how much you hate your boss and that stupid email you got earlier and how the pantry at the office is always out of coffee, nothing is every going to get better. Instead, look for the bright side to everything – and don’t pay any attention to complainers while you’re at it!
REMEMBER TO HAVE FUN & LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERY DAY
You got this job for a reason; whether you need the experience or the money or both, hold that reason in mind and live it through with passion. If you think your job is REALLY boring, don’t make it any worse! Focus on learning something new every day and having fun while you’re at it and time will fly. Before you know it, you’ll have a ton of great experience under your belt, one step closer to the job of your dreams.
